We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the generosity and kindness of Modern Turf and its owner, Hank Kerfoot, based in Camden, SC.

At Freedman Arts District, part of our mission is to renovate and, when feasible, restore homes in our historic community in a way that preserves the culture and character of our beloved district.
As we near the completion of two incredible projects, 807 Hamar Street and 1714 Washington Street, we find ourselves in need of one final, essential touch: grass.
As a nonprofit, we rely on the kindness of donors, community leaders, and like-minded businesses who believe in what we do. After reading about Mr. Kerfoot’s incredible legacy of giving back, I reached out, simply hoping for a conversation.
To my surprise, he replied almost immediately. He inquired about our mission, purpose, and community. And within minutes, he said yes. He went above and beyond anything I thought would be possible.
Thanks to Modern Turf, these homes will be completed with beautiful, high-end Zorro Zoysia sod and Blended Earth soil donated, delivered, and gifted with heart.
In a world often filled with no, Mr. Kerfoot said yes. Even though Beaufort isn’t his home, he’s helping to ensure that these two fully renovated houses become homes with yards that will be enjoyed for many years to come.
Tomorrow morning, I’ll be there bright and early to accept this donation. By the end of the weekend, a corner of our district will stand as a living testament to what can happen when kindness, determination, and hard work come together.
Please join us in thanking Modern Turf and Hank Kerfoot for reminding us that generosity still thrives—and that some roots are planted not in soil, but in human goodness. 💚
