1401 Duke Street
FUTURE FREEDMAN ARTS DISTRICT OFFICE
Prior J&M Market Circa 1910
We are thrilled to announce the Historic District Review Board granted Final Approval for our project at 1401 Duke Street. During the next year, we will bring new life to the corner of Duke and Wilmington Streets in Beaufort SC. Vacant since before the 1997 Beaufort Sites Survey, 1401 Duke has been on the vacant and abandoned list for many years. It has been sold at tax sale and even had a SC Department of Transportation easement through the South and East portions of the building.
Many thanks to all who have helped along the way including Senator - Tom Davis, Architect - Bill Chambers, Dennis and Mary E. Harvey, Dick Stewart, City Beaufort SC, the Historic District Review Board, and Historic Beaufort Foundation We can't wait to see this crumbling structure brought back to a functional commercial building, the Headquarters of the Freedman Arts District. Thank you all for your combined support and hard work to make this happen!
