Class Information

Just one year after Brown vs. Board of Education established that racial segregation in schools was unconstitutional, local branches of the NAACP sent a petition to the Beaufort County School District asking for local schools to be desegregated. The petition, published in The Beaufort Gazette, included the names of almost fifty Northwest Quadrant residents along with their addresses. During this talk, Historian Elizabeth Laney will examine the significance of this remarkable petition, including its success or failure, as well as what the petition reveals about the families who called the Northwest Quadrant their home in the mid-20th century.
