Class Information
Palmetto roses are a traditional craft in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. They are often made by Sweetgrass Basket Weavers and thus are associated with the Gullah culture. They are made from palmetto fronds and are typically presented as a love token or keepsake. Tradition holds that southern ladies would give their true love a Palmetto Rose to keep them safe from harm as they rode into war. Today these roses are still keepsakes that symbolize everlasting love. The Palmetto Rose is made from fronds from South Carolina's official State Tree -- The Palmetto Tree. South Carolina is known as the Palmetto State. About your instructor: Susan Creed Sauer is from Aiken, South Carolina. She moved to Hilton Head Island in 1972 and immediately fell in love with the Low Country. Working in the tourism and transportation industry for 28 years led her to start her own tour company. Susan basically was a Step-On Guide for groups that visited the Low Country from all over the United States. Susan narrated historical tours for groups visiting Hilton Head, Beaufort and Savannah. In 1990 She started packaging (bundling) the group tours to include the hotels, restaurants, tours, museums, boat tours, and entertainment. She retired at the beginning of Covid and began crafting during her free time. At first, she focused on jewelry and shell wreaths but soon found herself weaving palmetto roses also (self-taught). Susan is retired from the tourism industry and enjoys camping with her Husband and shelling at Hunting Island and Edisto Island whenever she can. All her wreaths are made from local shells that she has found on local beaches. We are honored to provide meaningful, creative experiences for our community. Because our classes require advance preparation, instructor commitment, and material purchases, we have established the following policy: Registration & Payment Full payment is required at the time of booking to reserve your seat. Class sizes are intentionally limited to ensure an intimate and engaging experience. Refund Policy All class registrations are non-refundable. This policy allows us to fairly compensate our instructors and secure necessary materials in advance. Transfers If you are unable to attend, your registration may be transferred to another participant. To transfer your seat, please email the full name of the new attendee to: Director@FreedmanArtsDistrict.org Transfer requests must be submitted prior to the start of the class. Class Cancellations by Freedman Arts District In the rare event that a class must be canceled due to weather, low enrollment, or unforeseen circumstances, participants will receive either: A full refund, or The option to transfer to a future class.
